RAIPUR: Naya Raipur, located about 20 km southeast of Raipur and proposed administrative capital of Chhattisgarh has been renamed to “Atal Nagar” in a move to commemorate the late former prime minister and BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The Chhattisgarh Cabinet on Tuesday approved the proposal to rename Naya Raipur as Atal Nagar, Chief Minister Raman Singh said.
“A memorial of Atal ji will come up in Naya Raipur. A statue of Vajpayee will also be installed at Naya Raipur as well as in all 27 district headquarters of the state and a central park will be developed in Naya Raipur in the name of former prime minister”, Raman Singh told reporters after the meeting.

In addition, the Bilaspur University will be known as Atal Bihari Vajpayee University while the Narrow Gauge Line will be called Atal Path. The Central Park, which is being constructed beside collectorate, will be named as Atal Park. The Rajnandgaon Medical College will also be renamed after Vajpayee.
Also commemorating the former prime minister’s contribution to the nation by undertaking another series of nuclear tests in 1998, a battalion of the Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) will be called the “Pokhran Battalion“.
Vajpayee, who was elected nine times to the Lok Sabha, twice to the Rajya Sabha and served as the Prime Minister of India for three terms; 1996, 1998, 1999–2004, died in New Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences, on August 16.
Earlier, the Madhya Pradesh government also decided to build two memorials in Gwalior and Bhopal and include a biography on Vajpayee in the school curriculum from next year to preserve the memory of the late leader. The Shivraj Singh Chouhan government also agreed to name the Global Skill Park, being developed at a cost of Rs 600 crore in Bhopal, after Vajpayee.
The Himachal Pradesh Cabinet approved the proposal to install Vajpayee’s statue at Shimla’s historic Ridge. It also sent a proposal to the Centre to name the upcoming strategic Rohtang Tunnel after the former prime minister.
